Report: WTM meet-up
Meet-up report of 09 February 2018
The program started at exactly 10:50 am and the opening prayer was led by Adeniyi Olajumoke Muteeah.
Topic: HOLD THE DOOR OPEN presented by Patience Igbadia
The speaker gave a brief introduction on what "Holding the Door Open" means, that is to encourage each other and always helping one another.
For years, women have been told they don't network as well as men perhaps it's just that they didn't get the opportunity to network. Now after years of being told to keep out, women have taken charge by creating the opportunities themselves and holding the door open for each other.
Exemplary women includes:
1. Christiana Vuleta, Forbes staff
Tweeted this; "Everybody has a story to tell. An easy story doesn't help".
2. Bozoma Saint John, Chief Brand Officer of UBER
She said: " We need to change the way our environment looks, feels and behaves". And if UBER can do it, that proves anyone can!
She has never faced a turnaround as challenging as UBER with history of sexism, harassment and HR negligence. Yet she has no doubt she can pull of a transformation, saying; "clearly I am confident. I have done it before".
" I am holding the door open for other women to come through and it is so heavy ".
She said; " When I did the demo for Apple (at the world wide developers conference), I was the first black woman on stage and I felt the burden (to do well) because if I didn't, it would be harder for the next one".
3. Actress Taraji P. Henson spoke about supporting other women coming up. She believes that women can help each other tap into their power through sharing their stories. "I know how hard you've work to get there" said Henson. We need each other.
4. Anne Wojcicki, Cofounder of DNA testing company.
When a door doesn't open, find a new door. "We all have walls", she said. But I could see a world where those walls are different. Wojcicki also talked about the importance of mentoring, saying; " I think often times we are loud about things that are going wrong, but we don't do enough to encourage each other when there's something that has gone right".
Patience during her presentation
